Dhaliwal Appoints New Members To Fisheries Resource Conservation Council

OTTAWA — Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the appointments and re-appointments of members of the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (FRCC), effective January 1, 2002.

Appointed to the Council are Douglas Johnston, Prince Edward Island, Jean-Jacques Maguire, Quebec and Karl Sullivan from Newfoundland. Re-appointed are Fred Woodman as Chairman, Bruce Chapman, Jean Guy dÂ’Entremont, John Pope and Dr. George Rose as members of the Council. Terms for these appointments and re-appointments are from one to three years.

“I would like to thank Dr. Jean-Claude Brêthes, Gabe Gregory and Frank Hennessey for their contributions and their commitment to the conservation of fisheries resources during the years they have served on the Council,” said Mr. Dhaliwal. “I also want to offer my congratulations to the new and returning members and I am pleased that Mr. Woodman has accepted to remain as chairman. I am confident that the knowledge and the diverse interests and experience of the members will result in valuable science and conservation advice for the Atlantic fisheries.”

The FRCC consists of a chairperson and 13 members representing the scientific and academic communities and the fishing industry, as well as six delegates appointed by the four Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Nunavut and three ex-officio members from Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

As part of its mandate, the Council provides advice to the Minister on conservation measures for the Atlantic fisheries, including recommendations on catch levels. The Council also provides advice on scientific research and assessment priorities as well as on straddling and transboundary stocks under the jurisdiction of international bodies such as the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization.
